![]() Higher gain tubes tended to sound too harsh. The stock Marshall tube was a long plate Russian tube. The next thing I did is try different preamp tubes. With the back panel removed I set the bass at 7 with mids at 3.5 and highs at 3 Anything above 5 on the high end is too shrill at high volume. The stock speaker sounds hollow and scooped to me - maybe Marshall was going for a more modern sound. ![]() Removing the back panel changes the frequency response of the speaker and it sounds better, but not as good as the Jensen Neos. I plugged into a 2x10 cab with Jensen Neos 10-100 and it sounded like a whole different amp. It has a nasty upper mid spike around 3K that is reedy and annoying. So I tried some quick changes and now I'm much happier with the amp. It can either sound great or horrible depending on how you set it up. People either love this amp or love to hate it. I have the AVT50 head and love it but I was a bit disappointed when I first plugged into the AVT combo.
